Union Creek Resort - Prospect, Oregon
CC and I hopped in the car and drove out of Portland without a plan. We don’t usually behave so spontaneously, and we bickered a bit along the way, but finally decided that if we were going to keep driving we might need to pick a destination and then eventually go there. We had heard about Crater Lake, didn’t know much about it or its surrounding areas but committed ourselves to winging it.
We stopped for coffee in Bend, Oregon, and made a call to a place we found on Google. The time was 5:45pm and the manager made it clear he was closing for the night at 8pm. He was confident we would make it in time and we struck out on a course into parts unknown.
We arrived at a junction called Union Creek near Prospect, Oregon, which offered a nice traveler’s rest, with lodgings large enough for families, couples and dorm-style rooms for backpackers. We found it nice to spend a night without television, which forced us into having a conversation.
There was a general store on site where you could load up on souvenirs, foodstuffs and maps. And breakfast, lunch and dinner was served at Beckie’s, a rustic cafe famous for its menu of homemade pies, just across the road. We spent only one night at the resort and ate dinner and breakfast at Beckie’s, which were fantastic discoveries, but honestly paled in comparison to what sights and sounds we found at Crater Lake National Park.
